The 7th century Saxon
Arch![]() The remains of the early seventh century Saxon doorway, built with Roman bricks, can be seen behind the choir stalls on the north wall of the Chancel. The arch and part of the surrounding wall can also be seen in the external north wall of the church. Excavations under this doorway in 1954 disclosed four lower floors, the lowest of which is the floor of the earliest church on this site. Other excavations show that the earlier floors probably extend beneath the whole of the Chancel.
